BOOK REVIEW: The Law of Attraction (Hicks)

I’ve decided to try to do some book reviews since I’m pretty much always reading books about how to make life more blissful. My hope is that by sharing some of these books, you might find some inspiration for your own life. (Of course, that’s really my hope for most things I post.) If you have a book you’d like me to review, just message me the title and author and I’ll check it out!

My first book is The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham, by Esther and Jerry Hicks. Woo hoo! Here we go ...

Let me start by saying that I love this book. I always find just the information I need in it’s pages, and often just when I need it.

Let me also preface this review with the fact that the first time this book came into my consciousness - just over twenty years ago - I wasn’t able to receive it’s wisdom because I allowed myself to get caught up in the confusion of how the information was being presented.

I’ll explain this a bit. This book is authored by Esther and Jerry Hicks. But the subtitle of the book is The Basics Of The Teachings Of Abraham. And this is where it can get tricky for some folks - including that younger version of myself. Abraham is the name of the source of “infinite intelligence” that gets spoken through Esther Hicks while she is in a trance state. “Infinite intelligence” is how Esther, herself describes Abraham. It’s kinda like channeling, though they don’t really like that word. It’s a bit unusual, to be sure. And it’s easy to get caught up on the weirdness of how the information is being presented, especially if anything woo woo is waaaaay left of your wheelhouse. But, my invitation to you is to take in the information given, and worry not about the stuff that describes how it’s given. Once I was finally able to do this, this book became absolute magick for me.

This is the book that first introduced the world to The Law of Attraction [as we know it commonly today].

The Law of Attraction, in its simplest form, states that like attracts like. It is based on the premise that we as individual sentient cognitive beings are the manifestors of our own experience. We have, through the power of our own thoughts and feelings, the ability to create any life experience we choose. We create our circumstances - good, bad, and mediocre. Perhaps the most important teaching of this book is that we are always creating. If we aren’t creating deliberately - by carefully curating our thoughts and feelings - then we are creating by default. Creating by default is to allow external circumstances to dictate our life experiences, which usually leaves us wanting.

This book uses an interesting format. There are traditional chapters, but within each chapter, the information is broken down into questions and answers. The questions are asked by Jerry Hicks, and are answered by Abraham, as told through Esther.

At first I wasn’t sure how I liked this format. But as I kept reading I found it to be really helpful at breaking down the information into bite-sized, situational pieces. This made it much easier for me to begin to conceptualize how to put this information into practical application in my life.

The teachings are pretty simple. From a theoretical standpoint they make absolute sense to me. But in practice, I find I can get easily tripped up thanks to a lifetime of opposing indoctrination. So, having these specific situational questions posed and answered helped me to better understand what to do when I found myself floundering in practice.

I am continually working on sculpting my creation muscles, and I always see corroborating evidence of my success or failure. It’s a Law, after all. It’s consistent. It’s Universally true.

I can finally say that I am a complete fan of this book. I highly recommend it. I believe it to be applicable to every single human being. And I believe it to be a tool for positively affecting the entire World Community, as more and more individuals begin to deliberately put it into practice.

Do yourself (and the world) a favor: Read this book. Get over the strangeness of HOW it’s being shared, and soak in WHAT is being shared. Practice these exercises daily. Then share a copy of this book with your friends and family.

Have you already read this book? What was your experience of it? Share below, I’d love to hear from you!
