Human Design + How It Changed My Life

I was recently asked to share a little bit about what Human Design is and how it changed my life to another brand’s audience. As a logophile, I can have a hard time reigning in my answers to what I consider such big, broad questions. There’s so much to talk about when it comes to Human Design! And whittling it down to what feels most important for people who aren’t that familiar with it … well, it’s a tough ask for someone like me.

So … as an attempt to practice finding a more succinct way of introducing this magickal tool with the general public, and how it’s positively impacted my life, I’m sharing this blog post. (Yes, I’m already doing it … giving more exposition than is needed … but this is just how I roll, and it’s an attempt at—not a guarantee of—brevity.)

Human Design

Okay, so in a nutshell, what is Human Design?

This is the working definition I’m currently experimenting with:

Human Design is, at its essence, a tool for self-discovery and validation of all that is unique and marvelous about you as an individual. The system built upon a number of ancient esoteric arts and sciences; chiefly Astrology, the I Ching, the Hindu chakra system, the Kabbalah Tree of Life, and quantum physics. It is a deep and complex system, but even knowing just the most basic introductory information can have a powerful influence on the way you experience life.

As with Astrology, you need your birth data to generate a Human Design chart (called a bodygraph). This bodygraph is basically a blueprint that shows how any individual is engineered to utilize energy. There are SO MANY practical applications, but the most powerful thing you can learn from Human Design is how to discover and interpret the way your body uniquely communicates with your consciousness in order to let you know what’s aligned for you and what isn’t. In simplified terms, it teaches you how to tune into your own internal and infallible GPS system, guiding you toward your most fulfilling and impactful life.

As previously mentioned, it’s really hard for me to leave it here, since there’s just so much juiciness that can come from the bodygraph, but as an overview, this is feeling … pretty okay.

I’ve been studying and experimenting with Human Design for about ten years now. It’s been hugely informative and validating for me. A few of the things that really helped me early on (and continue to support me) are learning about my Aura Type, understanding what it means for me to have an undefined G Center, and tapping into my Strategy + Authority.

I am a Manifesting Generator Aura Type. This basically means that I’m meant to flit (like a butterfly) from one thing that lights me up, to another, and another, and so on. I am not designed to commit to just one interest and pursue it until the end of time. So many times in my life I had people questioning my ability to stick to things. I felt like I was perceived as flaky and noncommittal. I wondered what was wrong with me that I couldn’t just choose one thing and go with it like so many of my peers. Human Design let me know that there was nothing wrong with me. In fact, it was absolutely right for me to bounce from thing to thing to thing. As a result, I’ve amassed a great deal of experience and wisdom about a number of different things. (One look at the services page of my website will show you what I mean!) Manifesting Generators are, by their very nature, multi-passionate. This is aligned for us. It’s something to embrace, not suppress. This was such a huge shift for me, and such a welcomed confirmation that how I do things is perfect for me.

The G Center is one of nine energy centers in the bodygraph. This is the center that houses the energy of identity, direction, and love. When this center is undefined in a bodygraph, it can leave a person without a consistent and reliable experience of Self, of Life Direction, and/or of being lovable. Many people who identify as lifelong ‘seekers’ (particularly seekers asking who am I and why am I here?) will have undefined G Centers. With this lack of definition in the chart, a person is meant to have the answers to these questions called out of them by other people in their environments. Over time, and when in an aligned environment and community, we can find some stability in our experience of self, direction and love. But if we are not in an environment with people who are able to truly see us and encourage us, we can feel perpetually lost, alone, and adrift. (Being in a supportive environment is key!) Understanding this energy in my design has been massively helpful for me! Now I understand when I start feeling a little untethered from myself, it’s not because I don’t belong anywhere, or that I have no direction … it’s simply that I’m in an environment that isn’t so aligned for me; or that I’m lacking the kind of community that can help guide me along my path. Looking back over my life, I can see so many instances of this energy playing out very clearly. I’ve continuously been searching for a place that feels like ‘home’; a place where I can belong and be connected with a community of people that will embrace me and welcome the gifts I bring. There have been moments when I’ve found it, and many times when I’ve not. But now, at least I know what’s happening when I start to feel lost and disconnected from myself.

Lastly, and arguably, most importantly, learning my Strategy + Authority has been profoundly transformative. Human Design teaches that we are not meant to make decisions from the mind. We each have a special ‘inner authority’ that resides in the body. This inner authority communicates what is aligned and what isn’t for us. The Strategy, which is determined by Aura Type, is part of that equation, too. Basically, Strategy indicates how you’re designed to receive options, and [inner] Authority is how you choose from those options.

My Strategy is to respond. My Authority is Sacral. I am meant to respond to life as it comes. (This is in contrast to trying to create, or initiate, in life.) I use my Sacral Authority to determine what responses to make. Sacral Authority is from the Sacral Center. This center is nestled deep in the guts. Ergo, listening to my gut is how I know what’s aligned for me and what isn’t. I’ll literally feel it in my gut. Sacral Authority is also often expressed through sounds. If someone offers me something and my response is an excited ‘ooh!’, then it’s generally a safe choice for me. If I groan with exasperation, it’s probably better that I pass on that option. Just having this built-in system for making decisions can be so helpful in getting me out of my head. I can be prone to analysis paralysis in a big way! But knowing that logic and reason are not the tools I’m meant to use when making my decisions can help me to not get so caught up by the endless stream of thoughts, shoulds, coulds, and what-ifs that perpetually populate my mind at any given moment. I have a clear and direct access to my Sacral Authority that I can check in with to find certainty. This has been miraculous.

I could go on and on … but I won’t … at least not here. But feel free to message me with questions if you have them!

The real beauty of Human Design is that it reminds us that we are each unique, each of us different; and that this is a wonderful thing. It helps us to celebrate our differences; to understand that we all have something special to bring to the collective table, and our own way to bring it there. It fosters more acceptance and tolerance of the self and of others. And this is why I love sharing it with the world.

Should you be curious about Human Design, I invite you to embark on your own exploration of it. (It can be daunting at first … just take your time!)
