Do you know about Omen Days? I’ve written about them previously, but it was years ago. I figure it’s time for another mention.
Omen Days are intercalary days, leftover after the solar year is configured into our modern 365-day Gregorian calendar. In essence these are ‘days out of time’ as they are fillers or space holders to make the calendar container work.
The Omen Days begin on 26 December, and continue through 06 January. Omen Days are traditionally seen as an opportunity to divine information about the coming years. Each of the 12 days represents a month of the new year. Starting with 26 December representing January, and on through the calendar each successive day.
These Omen Days have also come to be known as the 12 Days of Christmas. (You may recall a famous song about them?) In the song, a true love presents a different gift on each day. In practice, Nature gives us unique glimpses of what to expect in the coming year on each day.
Traditionally, folks would look to Nature for this divinatory data. They’d read the patterns of birds’ flight, the way certain plants were responding to the weather, animals’ behaviors, cloud patterns and more. And while that is still a perfectly acceptable way to utilize the magick of the Omen Days, it can also be a little less accurate considering how removed most of us are from the Natural world and how to read it.
This is why I like to consult the tarot during the Omen Days. I find it a more relevant form of divination for me, personally. I choose one card each Omen Day. I journal about my impressions of what this card has to tell me about the associated month of the new year. Then, as each month approaches, I consult my journal in order to remind myself about what energies are likely to present during the month at hand.
If tarot cards don’t feel good for you, you might consider other forms of divination such as tasseomancy, pendulum dowsing, scrying, or whatever lights your fancy. Bibliophiles could have fun with opening a book to a random page and blindly pointing to a word on the page. That word would then encompass the energy of the month. There are many ways to explore the magick of Omen Days. Let your intuition guide you to what feels right for you.
It can also be interesting to go through each Omen Day’s ‘gifts’ on the 7th of January. This can help you to see an emerging story or any themes that might repeat throughout the year. This isn't necessary, but it can add an extra layer of depth to your new year divinations.
I’ll be posting my Omen Day tarot cards on social media as I draw them. Subscribe to my accounts to follow along!
Whatever the Omen Days have to share with you, I hope the new year has some golden treasures in store for you. Happy celebrating, dear ones!
