The Tarot Tells: Sowing the Seeds of Love Under Capricorn's New Moon

Happy New Moon, Bliss Bunnies! The new moon is a time of darkness, figurative and literal. It is a time of new beginnings, of the void, of rest between the completion of one phase and the beginning of the next. This new moon is also in the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn's energy is steady, determined, and focused on a goal. It rules the skeleton, and corresponds to the Earth element. The new moon in Capricorn is about bringing our intentions into the physical realm for manifestation. It is about allowing that which is often hidden and quiet within to come out into the world and spread its magick. I really love what Mystic Mamma (mysticmamma.com) has to say about this new moon in Capricorn: We began the year coming to terms with what is no longer working and what needs to be let go of and now it’s time to move onward and trust in the unknown journey that awaits. The beauty is we can choose to learn from our past and use our experiences as the fertile soil that will one day shoot new sprouts. Just as the dandelion seeds are carried in the wind to new ground, so we are held in the great continuum of life as it unfolds.

General Overview:

The 10 of Cups makes for a beautiful seed in this new moon reading. Tens are the culmination, or fulfillment, of a suit’s potential. Cups are all about emotions, nurturing, feminine energy, and love. This is a wonderful time to plant the seed of agape love. Agape is a word used to describe the kind of love that is unselfishly offered to all beings. In massage school, we learned a similar term called “Unconditional Positive Regard” which has a very similar meaning. This is the idea that all beings are deserving of our compassion, our recognition, and our love. Like Sly and the Family Stone say: “We are family.” And, of course, Bob Marley sang about “One Love”, which is yet another way of labeling this kind of purity of emotion and kindness for our earth family. This new moon cycle is a time for sowing the seeds of love. (Yes, another musical reference, from Tears for Fears.)

Nine of Wands is in the Unfavorable Growing Conditions position. There may be fears of planting these seeds, only to have no one accepting their fruit. It can be a very vulnerable thing to put ourselves out in the world in a loving and open way. It is easy to feel like we don’t deserve love in return.

Interestingly, it is Ace of Cups that allows us to overcome those fears. Ace of Cups is the undiluted potential for everything the Cups represent. This is a suggestion to pare things back to the very essence. To break this idea of worldly love into more of a microcosmic experience. Choose small deeds and personalize your expressions of this Universal love as you begin to open your heart. The more you offer these small gifts of love, the more love you will feel in return. The more love you feel, the more you will love expressing love. This is how to amend those unfavorable growing conditions and get your seed to germinate.

The Queen of Cups is here to tell us how our seed is likely to take root in our lives. This is a card of motherly love. Of mothers, daughters, and the feminine expressions of love … namely, receptivity and nurturing. Be on the lookout for these expressions, and/or for the appearance of mother-figures in your life in the next couple weeks.

The Moon shows how to nurture the seed as it begins to pierce through the earth, taking on an existence of its own. This is a time to lean into the feminine energy within. Every female and every male possesses both feminine and masculine energies. The feminine energies are more subtle, quiet, and receptive. Utilize intuition now. Handle challenging people and circumstances with delicacy and diplomacy. Listen to your inner voice for guidance.

Should you manage to get your seed of love planted, tended, and grown to maturation, you are likely to notice some lovely fruit and flowers showing up for your pleasure and nourishment. These are gifts such as an easy disarming of any potential aggressors or violent circumstances. When one is focused on love, it becomes second nature to diffuse explosive situations with an ease and grace that leaves everyone involved feeling recognized and respected. This is a beautiful gift, and the more we share it, the more others learn how to use it as well. And so it goes, love spreading from one to another to another to another, ad infinitum.
